Happy New Year to all. Hope to see many of our menbers at the first meeting in 2012.
Circumstances prevented having meetings in the last two months so we'll take another first look at Ubuntu 11.10 (Oneiric Ocelot) It's working quite well on my desktop and laptop systems, and there have also been a great many updates installed. I plan to do a brief Oneiric demo on my T42p Thinkpad where it's installed as a dual boot, along with WindowsXP Pro SP2.
We'll also take an introductory look at UEFI, a replacement for the current 30-year long-lived BIOS, used in all PC's. UEFI is the subject of the top story by Woody Leonhard in the "Windows Secrets Newsletter" Issue 322 of January 19th. This issue may be freely downloaded from http://windowssecrets.com. Windows 8, scheduled for release by Microsoft late in 2012 or early 2013, will support a full range of UEFI features. Mac & Linux will perhaps support some lesser number. I suspect that user interest, actual usage, and reasonably priced motherboards will all start to accelerate following release of Windows 8. All computer users should definitely read Leonhard's article.
We can also discuss some of the newest digital devices now on the market. Special invitations are extended to all members who may have purchased any of these devices to attend the meeting to discuss and demonstrate their new items.
